Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
