Government Official States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This broader security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
